I am going to suggest that the English translation should end with the word, "am," so that the poem can be read as a complete circle, like the wheels of the box cars.
interesting thought. stephen mitchell, who made the translation i used, made a different choice. i favor his, mostly because the *i* of the narrator remains vulnerable and therefore in danger.
